Nancy Metz is a visual artist and educator based in Oyster Bay, NY. With an M.F.A. from Yale School of Art and over 17 years as the visual arts teacher at the Waldorf School of Garden City, Nancy brings intentionality to her work that is informed by her experiences studying with master painters as well as the refreshing perspective of young students. She works primarily in oil, acrylic, and pastels; her images reflect a fascination with light and its influence on the mood of an image. Artists whose work she admires include Wayne Thiebaud, Marsden Hartley, Gretna Campbell, Vincent Van Gogh, Gabriele Münter, and Oscar Bluemner.
Emerson spoke of seeing the “miraculous in the common”, and Goethe, of the need to keep the feeling for beauty alive. Goethe also wrote of the individual’s surrender to the “commonplace, his mind and his senses so easily blunted…”. The visual world is full of the juxtaposition of moments of beauty amidst the common or familiar. Making images on canvas allows me to share my recognition of these moments while expressing my separate and distinct appreciation of interacting vibrant color and the physicality of paint.
